Medevac Extraction: A Life Saved At Sea

Medevac extraction is the timely and efficient movement and en route care provided by medical personnel to the ill. Airgurus Ltd. Co., provides national and international medical evacuation (medevac extraction) and air ambulance services for shipping companies.

Like in the case of a Filipino and a second officer at sea on board a vessel.  Airgurus received a distress call from a shipping company around midnight of March 4, 2011.  The ship’s captain advised that one of their vessel’s seamen on board was suffering from an unknown illness. The patient initially complained of dizziness and headaches accompanied by feeling very weak.  In addition, he has difficulty opening his eyes. Also, the patient told his management that he had gastric problems and he was just taking self-medication.

At that time, the vessel was already deviating its’ course to Zamboanga, Philippines. The captain of the vessel advised that as of 07:45, they arrived in R/V position 07 06 N 121 43E approximately 10 nautical miles off the coast of Zamboanga. The vessel is a Cape Size bulk carrier and has a helicopter landing operations designated area on top of hatch number six (6).  Consequently, Airgurus’ Capt. Lero immediately confirmed that the air ambulance will immediately fly out at 6am same day to conduct medical evacuation / extraction of the patient.  Therefore, the air ambulance left on schedule and reached the vessel all the way from Manila by 2pm.  As a result, Airgurus’ air ambulance helicopter was already on its’ way 25 nautical miles off Zamboanga to Davao airport by 2:30pm . Hence, the patient is already on his way to Davao Doctor’s hospital by 5:15pm via a ground ambulance.

Airgurus Ltd. Co., provides air ambulance services in the Philippines.  And, it is recognized as the leader in medical air transportation. Also, the flight crew includes the most experience flight paramedics in the field. Furthermore the aircraft is operated by the highly skilled pilots who make sure that time is not wasted. Most of all, the company offers 24-hours emergency and non-emergency medical transport throughout Philippines and in other Asian countries.

Philippines Air Ambulance Service – Why is the cost high?

Philippines is one of the countries in the world needing more air ambulance service.  The country is composed of more than 7,100 islands.  Land and sea travel takes time in most cases. The need for air ambulance have increased a lot in the past 10 years.  More tourist are coming in the country both for vacation and business.  Philippines air ambulance service are slightly high since not all islands have airports and helicopters are mostly used. Since a lot of islands are more than 30 miles apart it is suggested and required by law to fly twin engine helicopters. This makes it even more expensive. Generally, planes are faster and cheaper to operate.  With how the Philippines is made up you sometimes don’t have a choice but to use twin engine helicopters. At the end of the day life matters no matter what the cost is for most people.

With its economy booming the country is expecting the influx of foreign tourist in the coming years, Philippines air ambulance service demand is on the rise. The more people there is the more likely there will be accidents or sickness.  It’s just like cars, the more cars on the roads the more accidents there is. With beautiful beaches spread across the country it’s very attractive for most foreigners. Combine it with low cost of living and the hospitality of Filipinos it’s certainly heaven for most foreigners. Some actually stay longer than expected and make the Philippines their second home.

Difference between airplanes and helicopters in Philippines air ambulance service

For those who don’t know the advantages and disadvantages between the two, let me give you the facts. First advantage of airplanes is they cruise faster compared to helicopters. They also have more cabin space and has longer range. What the helicopter lacks in speed, range and space makes up on its ability to land on almost any terrain. It does not need runways unlike airplanes. Helicopters are capable hovering and use a winch to pick up a patient. It can also land direct to a hospital helipad and avoid the traffic. Helicopters have more moving parts thats why maintenance cost is higher.

The distance is also considered when deciding what type of aircraft to use. Each type of aircraft have a certain cost effectiveness and this usually comes into play when deciding. Unless there is no airport then jets and airplanes have to take a backseat against the helicopters. Philippines air ambulance service or aviation in general is a complex business to run with a lot of variables to consider.

Possible Solutions

One of the solutions is building more airports across the country. With so many small islands in the Philippines it is not financially viable to operate many airports. Another solution is putting up more good hospitals across the country. Right now, Manila and Cebu are on top of the list followed by Davao as the only cities that have international standard of care. Hopefully with a few more dozen airports in combination with a few more good hospitals in the Philippine archipelago would bridge the gap and make it a little more affordable to ordinary people without insurance coverage. This will hopefully be seen in the next 5 to 7 years’ time based on the government’s plan to address the problem.

So, in the meantime we suggest to get an insurance with full air ambulance coverage. You’ll never know when accidents or sickness will strike.

For those who still finds insurances expensive an alternate solution is to become a member of Skyaid.  It is an air ambulance membership card within the Philippines. You can choose your dates of coverage from weekly up to 5 years. There is also a good deal if you have the entire family become a member. Restrictions apply so visit the webpage to find out more.

They are the search and rescue heroes that you need,  may it be on the ground or off the ground.

air ambulance history

The Origin of Air Ambulance and Medical Evacuation

EMS and air ambulance has been around since late 1800s. It is defined as the transportation of an injured person through an aircraft. It originated during military operations back then.

Air ambulance was firstly recorded as a term by Jules Verne’s Robur le Conquérant in 1866.  It describes the rescue of shipwrecked sailors by an airship (balloon) named the Albatross. Meanwhile, the first documented use of an air ambulance is during the Siege of Paris in 1870. Air balloons were used to rescue more than 160 soldiers from the dangers of the war in the city.

Air ambulance over the years

The first air ambulance flight was made during the Great War in the early 1900s. This took place when a Serbian officer was flown from the battlefield to a hospital. The trip was made through a French Air Service plane.

Moreover, the air medical ambulance can reduce the war mortality rate. This is according to the records of French authorities. They concluded that the mortality rate among war casualties can be reduced from 60% to less than 10%. This can be done if the casualties will be evacuated by air within 6 hours of injury.

Air ambulance during the World War

Moving forward, the first recorded British ambulance flight took place in 1917. The flight took place in Turkey. It is when a Camel Corps soldier was shot in the ankle. Afterwards, he was flown to the hospital in Havilland, DHH within 45 minutes.

Also, another air ambulance case was recorded in Britain during the 1930s. Some sick passengers in Britain were ferried by air from Scotland’s Western Isles to the mainland.

Later on, air ambulances were tested by various military organizations in the midst of First World War. However, it has received many various opinions. This is due to its limited capabilities that time. Nevertheless, the exploration of the idea pushed through. Finally, an organized military air ambulance service operated in 1936. It was able to evacuate wounded Spanish Civil War army for medical treatment in Nazi Germany.

Medical Evacuation over the years

The first documented medevac operations took place during the World War II.

In 1944, a US Army helicopter were forced down in a jungle in Mawlu, Burma. It carries three wounded British soldiers. The US Army Sikorsky YR-4B Helicopter has made four trips from April 25-26, 1944. This is despite of the fact that it can only carry one passenger at a time.

The first air ambulance service provider in America was established after the World War II. The first civilian air ambulance in Canada was made by the Saskatchewan government. On the other hand, the first air ambulance service in USA was the Schaefer Air Service by J. Walter Schaefer.

Medevac for Airgurus refers to private patient airlift services using a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft. Most cases at Airgurus are on travelers who find themselves in amazing places but off the beaten path.  That’s because sometimes,  adequate medical care they needed is not available. In a developing country like the Philippines, medical care is inadequate and unavailable in most areas where tourists visit. In situations where there is a lack of proper medical specialist for patient’s condition, insufficient and apt medicine and equipment, or substandard quality of care, ground travel is just not going to help the patient especially when it comes to their golden hours… the hours between life and that.

Airgurus is the leading provider of medical evacuation allowing the quickest access during medical emergencies. Every emergency inquiry is promptly handled by the staff at Airgurus. They are available round the clock, 365 days a year.  The medically-suited helicopter or fixed wing aircraft is immediately sent for a medical mission. Each patient’s transfer comes with the nurse from the in-house staff. And or physician if appropriate treatment is a requirement i.e., ensuring that the patient’s condition is stable during the flight until transfer is complete. If needing a ground ambulance, it is also available on standby for areas not accessible to airlift transfer.
