We are used to ground ambulance transport but what if the distance covered is too far? Or what if there is water to separate the destination and ground ambulance can’t do it. Good thing there is an air ambulance that can do it faster and more conveniently.

After receiving the first call, email or text inquiry a quotation is usually through email. The company awaits its’ signature and or acceptance by the requesting party.

In most cases, the patient is either in a provincial hospital or clinic. Airgurus requires the latest medical abstract for our physicians to determine the case of the patient. They then determine whether the condition of the patient is stable enough for a transfer. In lieu of a medical abstract, Airgurus also requires the contact details of the attending physician. This is to establish a VMC (verbal medical contact) between the air ambulance medical team and the attending physician.

Once a go signal is given by the attending physicians, Airgurus requires an assurance. Payments would be either by a cash deposit, credit card payment, wire transfer, or at least a dated cheque. If the patient has insurance the insurance company can make the payment on the behalf of the patient usually after a few days. It is allowable only with a guarantee letter indicating the amount, terms and other pertinent information. This gives a plausible assurance to the air ambulance provider.

After payment is set, then that’s the only time a schedule can be given since it’s a first-come-first-serve basis. Other uncontrolled factors like weather, fuel availability and airport slotting may affect the availability and dispatch time.

The attending physician has to make a call to the preferred hospital of destination to endorse the patient because most hospitals prefer they know a patient is arriving especially if its via air ambulance.

Usually, the air ambulance will meet the patient at the airport or helipad, but in some cases, it can be a bed-to-bed transfer. This means the patient is subject for transfer from the current hospital or clinic by the air ambulance provider to the final destination. However, this adds time for the air ambulance provider because they have to look for a third party provider that can transfer the patient. Not all clinics or hospitals have their own ground ambulance. In some cases, it requires a speedboat’s involvement if the patient’s location is from another island.
